My flesh delightfully enjoys satisfying my sweet tooth. Just thinking about it, my mouth begins salivating! If offered a sopapilla cheesecake, homemade coconut crème pie (not store bought), old fashioned banana pudding, or a warm large Texas chocolate sheath cake with Blue Bell vanilla ice cream, I would say “You best get out of my way!” 😊 I am an absolute glutton when it comes to these desserts.
Did you know that the redeemed spiritual part of your being delights in a sweet tooth? The sweet tooth in the spiritual world is very different than the flesh. Psalm 119 presents a great example of a “spiritual sweet tooth”. Listen to these words from Psalm 119:101-104, 101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, so that I may keep Your word. 102 I have not turned aside from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 From Your precepts I get understanding; therefore, I hate every false way. Your spirit craves the things of God, the very opposite of the cravings of the flesh. You cannot give your spirit too much of the Word of God, “sweeter than honey” to it.
The Psalmist in chapter 19 talks about his spiritual sweet tooth this way, 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. 10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much pure gold, sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, your servant is warned by them;
in keeping them there is great reward. We are guided to the “judgments of the Lord” by the Holy Spirit revealed in His Word. Heed these and you will be spiritually wealthy, like “pure gold” and will experience sweet emotions in the inner man that are “sweeter than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.”
There is one other thing that is “sweet” to the soul. This is recorded Psalm 55:14
“We who had sweet fellowship together.” Having open, transparent, vulnerable fellowship with dear, trusted brother and sisters is thrilling and edifying to your soul and so sweet. I encourage each of you to take a step toward God and ask Him to guide you toward a group of Christ-followers where you are able to experience the sweetness of fellowship.
Never forget these powerful verses that are so sweet to your soul:
- John 8:31&32, “Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching (His Word), you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” How sweet is that to your soul!
- Psalm 119:14-16, “Rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” The Word of God leads to rejoicing and delight to your soul,
Enjoy your spiritual sweet tooth. Meditate on the Word, day and night, delighting in it to the deepest part of your soul.
