Have you ever tried to straighten a bent nail? It’s not easy. In my case, they were bent because of really bad carpentry skills. The results have been multiple cuts and bruises on my fingers and the loss of a fingernail or two. Being an emotional guy who wears his feelings on his shirt sleeve, I find my life often like a bent nail. I get caught up with attitudes of people, tough relationships, cares of the world, and, most often, dark places within my mind. After many feeble attempts to straighten myself out, I eventually discover that the issues are bigger than me to sort out. I need the help from someone more able and insightful than me to make “my nails straight”.
As a result of the multiple bent nails in my life, it becomes apparent what my “go to” verses in the Bible are, Proverbs 3:5&6. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and He will make your paths straight.” I have to go to Jesus “with all my own understanding.” With me out of the way, He is able to do His magnificent work, and make my path straight.
As stated earlier, frequently my issues are in the deep, dark recesses of my mind. Sometimes, I use my outgoing personality, smile and laugh a lot trying to fool others but most times will simply withdraw from people. To straighten my nails, God has to go deep within me through His Word. Hebrews 4:12 explains, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” His word is:
- “alive and active”, full of life and “active”. The Greek word translated “active” originates our word, “energy”. Through His Word, we come alive and are energized enabling us to straighten our path living out the will of the Lord.
- a “double-edged sword,” sharp enough to “divide our soul and spirit.” Many people stay in their “soul” which is the mind, emotions, and will and have not activated the spiritual part of their being. His word will peel the “spirit” part of our being away, activating it which delivers the life of Christ and abundant living to the soul.
- like a surgeon’s scalpel and goes deep into the infected area and “judges the thoughts and intents of the heart.” His word is able to penetrate deep into our minds exposing the infected area and removing it. This ability has changed my life!
Do you have a nail or two in your life that needs to be straightened? If so, read and absorb Proverbs 3:5&6 and get into His word with your whole soul allowing Him to expose the truth that will enable you to heal. He can straighten each of your bent nails which brings life in abundancy.
