Create in me a pure heart

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:1-2

I find myself reading the above verse and crying out, “YES!” Not going to lie, I have been in quite a funk lately! I am not sure if it’s the groundhog day effect of working from home still, not getting enough sleep or what, but I’ve just been out of sorts. Plus that was a great worship song back in the day! (inserted below)

The above verse and many others in that VERY rich chapter in Psalms just resonated with me this morning. It goes on to talk about being cleansed with hyssop and being “whiter than snow!” Verse eight says, “Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.”

As I read through the rest of the chapter, a few things stood out. It wasn’t earth-shattering or even a lightbulb, aha moment, but more of a gentle comfort! I have read these verses numerous times and even have them highlighted in my Bible app, but today, as God so often does, they seemed new and fresh.

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me (v10). It is only God who can renew your heart or spirit, but when He does, they will be pure and steadfast!

Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me (v11). We have to remain in God’s presence to receive from Him what we need. Just as God shows us in John 15:5 where he teaches us that, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” We do that by staying in His Word … not to check off one of the items on your to-do list for the day, but to receive from Him our “daily bread”!

Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me (v12) God is the only one who can restore us to Himself … and He WILL!!! This also speaks to the fact that our spirit isn’t always a willing participant and is often contrary to things of God, but that we can go to Him, and He will sustain or uphold us with a willing spirit.

It is ALL about Him! I got to focused on me and my woes! It is time to be recreated and restored! Thank God for His provision in this!
