It is beautiful and healing to the soul to hear a properly tuned instrument played by a master. In our last home, Pam and I were fortunate to live two doors down from a couple of professional, acclaimed violinists who taught advanced students in their home how to play. Often, the windows were left open in their home as they trained. The beautiful sounds of the violin were absorbing and healing as I listened through wide open windows in my office.
In Romans 6, a description is made of each of us with personal instruments that can be played as instruments of wickedness or instruments of righteousness, 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
Let’s go back over this biblical passage and rehearse what it says. We have the wonderful opportunity to “offer every part” of our being “to God as an instrument of righteousness.” A life “offered” to God produces “the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 Corinthians 2:15). The fruit of our lives become, ”love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22&23). What a joy to you and most importantly to God and others around you as life plays out with your instruments “offered” to Him.
On the other hand, how ugly, out of tune and selfish your life becomes if you “offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness.” The songs you produce by these instruments are hurtful to yourself and painful to others. Here are some of the tunes played, “sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies…” (Galatians 5:19-21). Discord, lust and hurt are the product of selfishness.
What tunes are your instruments playing? Are they the fruit of the Holy Spirit or the discord of flesh? It is never too late to “offer every part” of your life to the Master. Allow His power, capabilities, acceptance and love to infuse your life. With our Lord orchestrating, the tunes played will shockingly be pleasing to your ears as well as others and most importantly to God.
