Beware the Trap

If y0u think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13

It’s easy to waver in the face of temptation. Leading up to these verses, the apostle Paul reminds the believers in Corinth about the Israelites, whom God personally accompanied during their journey from captivity in Egypt to the Promised Land. Along the way, however, they worshiped idols, succumbing to the lures of sexual immorality and putting God to the test. They even grumbled the whole way because things weren’t just the way they wanted them, even though God had freed them from slavery.

It’s easy to do the same today. We can be cruising along at times in life, doing what God has set before us…then things show up that distract us, dishearten us, and tempt us to stray. It’s been said many times that Satan doesn’t worry about throwing roadblocks in front of us if we aren’t posing a threat to him. But if we are a threat to him-if we are doing things for God-then watch out!

Want some practical advice? Stay rooted to people who are of similar mind and have a similar focus on God and Christ. Attend weekly Bible studies or join small groups at your church.

Similarly, stay grounded in and connected to your family. Everyone gets busy, and it’s easy to get disconnected a little bit at a time. Don’t let it happen.

Finally, make sure that you stay tethered tightly to God through regular personal quiet time and fellowship with others through reading the Bible, prayer and worship.

God, through the leading of the Holy Spirit within us, is unwavering and always absolutely right in where he leads us.
