Learn to live in the guidance of Jesus’ word step-by-step. Psalm 119 states, “105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” In today’s world, our reference to light is the high-powered headlights we have in our cars that shine brightly and penetrate clearly well into the distance. Our flashlights illuminate the darkness around us. We often pass by highway construction workers laboring at night almost as if it was in the light of the sun.
This is not the reference of the Psalmist. The picture of light to him was a lantern with a flickering flame. In other words, you have light for the next step only. And importantly, the person holding the lantern had to walk carefully and slowly so that the light was not extinguished. The guidance that we get from scripture is to learn to walk intentionally and mindfully step-by-step.
Galatians 5 emphasizes this in verse 25, “25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” This seems to paint a picture of a couple dancing. One leads and the other one follows step-by-step.
John the Apostle metaphorically explains the walk with Jesus in 1 John 1 “7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” As we walk in the Spirit, we converse with each and the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin. Let me assure you, Jesus is in no hurry as He talks with us. He doesn’t communicate on the run. Christ loves to spend time with us and is in no hurry!
He gives us light enough for the next step. Step-By-Step…
