If you got to know me, it would not take long for you to realize that I am very outgoing (okay, okay…loud!), impulsive and a very relationship driven guy. You may be thinking, “Rick, you sound like a red-hot mess!” Candidly, you would be pretty close to the truth! My point of saying this, no one who knows me well would misconstrue me as Mr. Organized, Plans-his-work-and-works-his-plan type guy. However, there are three words that have really grabbed my attention over this past year…Intentional-Mindful-Purposeful. I am convinced that even a spontaneous guy like me must incorporate these three words into my personal walk and behavior.
As we walk into 2019, I am challenging each of us to start the day and end the day with these three words. At the beginning of the day, “am I looking at the day in an intentional, mindful and purposeful way?” At end of the day, score yourself (1 to 5…1 being terrible and 5 being excellent).
Here is the by-product of this: James 1 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law (intentional) that gives freedom and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard (mindful), but doing it (purposeful)—they will be blessed in what they do.
Paul Philippians 4 makes a powerful, life-changing statement in verse 9, 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice (intentional, mindful and purposeful). And the God of peace will be with you. To put into practice means that intentionality, mindfulness and purposefulness has been incorporated into your life… “and the peace of God will be with you.”
Blessings in 2019!
