Goliath Would Be an ESPN Star!

We all know the story of David and Goliath.  However, I am going to quote scripture so that you read it straight from the Bible.  1 Samuel 17 Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines. The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them.

A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span (9’9”). He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels (125 pounds); on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels (15 pounds). His shield bearer went ahead of him.

Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” 10 Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.” 11 On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.

If this story had happened today, ESPN would have loved it!  And, no doubt about it, the story would have gone viral globally.  What a story!  It would have been top of the news!  Can’t you imagine ESPN daily keeping up with the story hopefully getting a live interview with Goliath.  Imagine the magnitude.  The battle line had been drawn…a valley in between one hill where the Philistine’s camped and another hill where the Israelites camped.  Daily this enormous, powerfully built athlete (9’9” tall, wearing 125 lbs. of armor and carrying a 15 lb. spear) marched out onto the battlefield challenging anyone from the Israelite side to fight him.  And, the Israelites were terrified.  ESPN would have made God’s men look like total cowards which they were!

Then, this small, young man, David, comes running out onto the field of battle to contest David.  What a joke!  Are you kidding me?!  This little guy had a slingshot and several smooth stones as ammo…that’s it!  ESPN commentator for sure would be shouting, “This poor kid has to be delusional; this won’t take long.  Poor lad!” Goliath was furious that the Israelites had sent out this young man and started screaming, derisive, vulgar words to affect fear.

However, it becomes apparent that this young man was fearless and ran towards Goliath screaming out his own words. “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”   Then, he breathtakingly took out a smooth stone from his bag, aimed his slingshot and made a perfect shot knocking Goliath unconscious.  Then, he cut off Goliath’s head.  What an amazing story!  What a humiliating defeat of the giant and Philistines!  And, what an amazing win for God’s people!

What or who is the Goliath that is striking terror in your life today…fear, depression, anxiety, bitterness, addiction, being a control freak and have lost control, a person, mourning a loss…?  Do not fight this battle on your own.  You will not win flying solo.  Fight as David did in “the name of the Lord Almighty” with confidence that he can strike your Goliath down.  Start trusting Him completely!  You will experience victory in His name.
