The Truth and The Consequences

John 8:31&32 declares, 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”   We as human beings are fixated on power.  I often hear folks say, “If I had power, I could have done this but I don’t.”  We may fixated on power but God is fixated on truth.  Why is that?  Satan’s primary weapon is the lie.  Our defense against him is the truth. Dealing with Satan is not a power encounter; it’s a truth encounter. When you expose Satan’s lie with God’s truth, his power is broken.  If you “know the truth, the truth will set you free.”  The consequences of living in and by Godly truth is freedom which leads to “true” life, light and oneness and not bondage. Live free!

Where do we get this truth?  The verse above is explicit.  Jesus said, “If you abide in my word…”  We get the truth that transforms our lives in His word, the Bible.  The verb used in this statement is the word, abide in.  NASB translates “abide in” as to “continue in.”  NIV interprets it as to “hold to.”  “Abide” is defined in this context as “continue without fading…live in…dwell.”  Abiding means for us to “moment by moment dwell in His Word.”  The consequences of this is freedom.

In Joshua 1, God commanded Joshua just before he led His people into the promise land, Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”  God told Joshua if he abides in His word:

  1. be careful to obey it
  2. do not turn from it to the right or left
  3. keep it always on his lips
  4. meditate on it day and night

then he would be successful wherever he goes.

Brothers, He is telling us the same thing.  Abide, dwell, continue in His word (the truth) and you will live with freedom which results in strength of character and courage.  You live free out from under bondage! AMEN!
