Why Jesus was Born

Can you state the reason you were born?  Some say they were born to hunt or born to fish.  Or born to play football or born to be a salesman.  Jesus shares this with us.  During Jesus’ trial he and Pilate have a private conversation with Pilate asking Jesus if he is King of the Jews.  Jesus answers saying: “You are right in saying I am a king.  In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.  Everyone on the side of truth listens to me” Jn 18:37

He affirms his kingship and states the reason he was born was: “to testify to the truth”.  In so many ways our world boils down to truths and untruths.  Indeed, Satan is called: “the father of lies” in John 8:44, the exact opposite of Jesus.

Look around, advertising, politics, the media, the courtroom, the workplace, you name it – there are so many untruths in this world.  And how many of us go around trying to cover up the truth?  Clothes or hair dyes that make us look thin or younger than we are. Cars to make us look successful.  And putting on a happy face in the midst of pain.  Then there is the gospel – the ultimate truth, that we are all basically flawed individuals in need of a savior.

We live in a post-modern world which advocates and celebrates the idea that we make our own reality, that there is no one standard, all values and opinions are relative and up to the individual.  What a lie!  Our world could not function if this were true.  When you get in an airplane should the pilot fly to the destination on your ticket or should he or she fly where they feel like going that day?  When you have surgery should the surgeon work on your ailing heart or should he or she poke around your liver instead?  Is real beauty based on appearance or their behavior, character, actions or inherent value?

Pilate answers Jesus with a very post-modern response to Jesus asking: “What is truth?”  Then he responds in a post-modern way saying: “I find no basis for a charge against him”, then has him executed and allows a guilty criminal to go free.    This courtroom decision is example of a post-modern lie, an untruth, injustice just to carry out the values and wishes of a group, not the truth of the evidence.

So in looking at any situation in this world I have come to try and look at what is truly true and to listen to Jesus because everyone on the side of truth listens to him.  This has helped me to make sense of the world and be more able to extend grace and love, be salt and light, and at times a healing touch in this fallen world.  I think this is the way to truly live, because sine Jesus came to testify to the truth he should be our filter to help us better understand and respond.
