6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:6-7
I was heading a different direction this morning for the Barnabas Man post until a story on the news caught my attention. You may have seen the story already, which featured a professional MMA Fighter, his name left out on this post.
The media coverage stated this boxer “lost his temper” and showed videos of him throwing a hand dolly through the window of a bus, which had multiple passengers inside. Some of those passengers suffered minor injuries and were withdrawn from their prospective upcoming fights.
Here again, the famous, rich, and fabulous stars of our American Society stricken by media coverage clearly showing a lack of ….. You guessed it… SELF CONTROL.
This boxer made $100 Million Dollars last years. I would guess even some of us contributed to his earnings via pay per view or other avenues of media coverage as his name has been known in the Boxing & MMA world for some time now.
The point today? $100 million dollars a year can’t buy you love. Money and fame and fortune and physical toughness and intense agility, none of it worth a dang thing for a man that has no self control. Years of training and millions of young followers all let down by one act of immaturity and rage causing the reputation to be ruined overnight?
God calls Self-Control a fruit of the Spirit. That is, those infused with the Spirit HAVE Self Control and more verses follow from Proverbs:
Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Proverbs 25:28 (ESV)
28 A man without self-control
is like a city broken into and left without walls.
I easily found over 15 places in Scripture where God calls the believer to have self-control or a similar ability to maintain a mature attitude of LOVE.
So what happens to us? Is this boxer the only one that lost his cool? Of course not… we all have… or perhaps I can only speak for myself. But SELF CONTROL… is a habit worth practicing. Even more so for the famous and filmed?
Need a place to start? Prayer to God followed by ONE SIMPLE PRACTICE… Listen to your own words, with everyone… think 5 seconds before you speak …. to ANYONE…. When was the last time you “raised your voice”? about ANYTHING?
Go 24 hours without raising your voice and see if you can do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next… $100 Million Dollars per year can’t buy you love and won’t grant you joy, peace, and patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.
Think about it… what would it take for you to love?
