Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? bTherefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit cthat he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But dhe gives more grace. Therefore it says , e “God opposes the proud but dgives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. fResist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 gDraw near to God, and he will draw near to you. h Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and ipurify your hearts, jyou double-minded. 9 kBe wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 lHumble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
I’m going to James this morning as this is where our small group has been camped for awhile. We’ve been enjoying a study in James using a Francis Chan Video series and over the last few weeks the personal lessons have really been amplified for me.
Something to be sure of …. the idea and status of http://www.BarnabasMan.com is NOT to boast of men but to raise up the name of Jesus Christ. Any words, thoughts, and posts focused on anything beyond this could be considered “friendship with the world.”
As my friend last evening shared with me, friend of the world is a hard thing to avoid for today’s man? Right? We talked on careers, provision, wants vs. needs, and the end of the study all came back to this: HUMBLE GRACE
For everyone gets the Grace from God, sometimes in our expected timing and sometimes not. However, not every one participates in the humility part that God requires. For a man today, as we are flooded with images, items, and ideas, there is so much draw to be a “Friend of the world”. It’s like living in prison, behind bars if you will, trapped, entangled, BONDED in the flesh. No matter for the MAN of CHRIST… this reasons have NO IMPACT on the committed man of God should he heed the words of the scripture. We CANNOT be focused on the worldly tings if we are to be granted the GRACE.
The Verses in James we studied gave multiple cross references and as we followed each one.. the theme remained the same…. Humble, humility, humble, humility…. humble…
It was striking to me how specific God was about His Grace allowances… Those that remain humble will be exalted. The man maintaining humility can effectively use God’s grace and go on promoting the Kingdom. There is no way around this. There are NO PRIDEFUL ways to glorify God and get grace. Every portion that comes from God comes through His promise and has humility attached to it.
This is the reason for multiple authors here. This is the reason we are to REACH out to others as friends if we are to receive friendships. We must participate in the world without becoming “of the world.” HUMBLE GRACE…. let us stay low on words, high on prayer, and remain on mission as His soldiers in an alien world. Like the fish in the ocean, never tasting like salt.
