Isaiah 60:19 – The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
Well I am sure you can figure out today’s post would be about the Philadelphia Eagles. Not only a story of a team with an unbelievable season, but even more remarkable… their story of faith!
My friend Tim and I enjoyed a game at Buffalo Wild Wings together early in the season as the Eagles faced the Dallas Cowboys and just creamed them. I remember Tim explaining to me about Wentz, Eagles Quarterback, and his story of faith in Christ. Additionally, many did not know that the Eagles team had been sharing their faith with each other and baptizing teammates in the hotel swimming pools throughout their road game events.
What was so amazing in this Superbowl LII was not just the score, the win and the end of the Tom Brady and Patriots saga, but the immediate statements of faith that came from the players as they kissed the Vince Lombardi trophy.
As the commentator came to the head coach first, a man that was coaching high-school football just nine years ago, the microphone was in front of him and here is what his FIRST WORDS were, ” First, I ‘d like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Wow, all the opportunity in the world to self promote and push his own career in front of millions of people, yet he brings it right to Jesus! Following him the tight end, Zach Ertz was the next to proclaim, “I give all the glory to God!”
And the third player to stand on the platform was the underdog, back up quarterback, 29 year old Nick Foles. A man that was considering hanging up football all together, and now studies divinity to become a pastor when his time in football is finished. As he held his young daughter and they gave him the mic the same statement resounded… “ALL GLORY TO GOD.”
How great is this God? For a time when the majority of the country is throwing darts at each other, bashing the government, witnessing school shootings, abuse, and corruption, amidst an NFL organization that has struggled with stands on patriotism and equal rights with a realm saturated with money and greed, America was blessed to hear the faith of these three men ALL give glory to their King. What a blessing! What an example…
So whichever side you were rooting for or whatever score you expected, no matter what stadium it was held in or which commercial you enjoyed… remember the outcome of the night… Glory to God, thanks be to God, and the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Such a nice treat for us common folks that may be going out into the world striving to just make it home in one piece, struggling to be the husband or father that can go 24 hours without thinking of some false life or “other” way… working to meet the goals and demands of today’s work load to just clear the electric bill or maybe put fuel in the cars without worry of having enough to get through the week…
So simple when we break it down to Christ glory right? How refreshing to know that there are still great attitudes of faith being proclaimed on national television. Yet I tell you today we are no different than the superstars and the champions…. We have the SAME ability this morning to proclaim the name of the King, to give the glory to the ONE that rescued our souls…
Give it to Him this morning and continue to do so throughout your day… watch the blessing unfold before you as you embrace the mission of Christ… He saved us for Himself and Himself alone and we are His Prize! All glory to God!
