The Easiest New Years Resolution for 2018

We are all at that time of year when we begin to reflect on the year that was and what we want for the year that is coming.  New Year’s Resolutions will be made with all the best intentions and most will fail.  What if I told you there was a really simple and easy New Years Resolution that will get you and give you everything you ever really wanted?  Think back to all of the different New Years resolutions that you have tried and failed at over the many years of spouting them out and supposedly committing to them.  Committing to them for the first week or even the first month to only eventually fail, most times before ever even getting started.  Below is a list of the most common New Year’s Resolutions (according to Nielsen) that most of us if not all of us has had at some point in our lives.

  1. Stay fit and healthy
  2. Lose weight
  3. Enjoy life to the fullest
  4. Spend less – Save more
  5. Spend more time with family and friends
  6. Be more organized
  7. Learn something new or take up new hobby
  8. travel more
  9. read more
  10. Work harder – earn more money
What is most interesting about all of these is that as simple as they all may seem they all indicate that there has to be a plan, and you have to be willing to be able to execute that plan on a consistent basis in order for there to be results.  Most New Year’s Resolutions fail due to lack of commitment, not quick enough results, it was a nice thought but no time for it, or just plain and simple no plan to achieve.
So back to my earlier statement about having the easiest New Year’s resolution that could actually give you all you ever wanted.  What is interesting to me in all of the above mentioned resolutions is that not a single one is related to a relationship with God.  What if every year the resolution that you made for the New Year was about your faith and God.  Here is what that list might look like.
  1. Lean into God more
  2. Pray to God every day
  3. Learn to understand God more by reading scripture
  4. Praise God every day
  5. Give it all to God every day
  6. Give back to God by serving those in need
  7. Listen to God’s Holy Spirit
  8. Become the Gospel God set out for you
  9. Lead your family through faith and teachings of Jesus Christ
What if you had just one of these or even all of these as your New Year’s resolution for 2018?  What if every day you started out with a prayer, or every day you decided to give up all your worries, concerns and issues to God every day?  What if you decided to live by listening to God’s Holy Spirit every day and allow him to guide you to your goals and dreams and wishes?  Scripture says in Isaiah 40:31 “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”.
I challenge you to adopting a New Year’s Resolutions that begin with faith and a commitment to God, and then lets return next year and see how your year went when letting God lead you instead of you trying to lead you.
