Have your ever stopped to realize that it is the 2nd thought that determines your walk with Jesus? There is not much you can do about the 1st thought. It is what you choose to do with the 2nd thought that determines your thought patterns moving forward. Allow me to give you some examples:
If you notice a beautiful, attractive lady pop up on or in the margins of your computer screen while working, scanning through the daily news, enjoy some chill out time, or even during devotional time your first thought most likely is to quickly acknowledge her beauty and that’s okay. However, what happens at the intersection of the 2nd thought? You make the decision whether to apprehend that thought choosing to alert your eyes and mind to move away and onto something else. Or, will you allow your mind to fall into the trap mentioned in James 1 14 each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Literally, the word “dragged away” means to be allured away. The 2nd thought is when the devil goes fishing and drops the most attractive lure that he can. Then if you bite on that lure, you are dragged away by your own evil desire and enticed. Then after the desire is conceived (picture of a baby), it gives birth to sin…and when that baby is full grown, you experience death (separated from fellowship with Jesus). Once you are at the “full grown” stage, the devil moves from deception to accusation and he kicks your emotional butt. When does this all start? At the 2nd thought.
This could happen when someone gets a good look at a dress, car, jacket, electronic device, etc. that they really desire to own but cannot afford. The 2nd thought becomes ultra-important determining whether they are lured away (“you deserve this…enjoy some retail therapy” the devil starts whispering within your mind in such an easy, winsome way). You make a bad choice and are lured away, baby is conceived, becomes full grown and you make the purchase with plastic. Then, the recognition hits you like a sledge hammer that now you have to pay for this thing without the needed funds available. Satan really enjoys this phase as he screaming accusations inside your mind… “How stupid could you be? Your husband (or wife), mom/dad, girl/boyfriend or life coach is going to kill you! What a failure!!” This hurtful process or cycle begins from the wrong choice with the 2nd thought.
How about a potential situation that triggers your anger? What are you going to do with your 2nd thought?
Someone brings up something that could be personally detrimental to your current experience? What do you do with 2nd thought…choose to own up to it and face it or choose to lie?
How about an alcoholic drink, when you are addicted? That 2nd thought becomes critical.
Start being mindful about the 2nd thought and choose what you know is right based on God’s word. You will be overpowered if you choose to do this in the strength of your flesh. However, acting in the power of the Holy Spirit choosing Him to be active in your life, you will experience truth, grace and victory. This reminds of a dynamite passage, 2 Timothy 1 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
Soak up Eph. 4:22-24 by meditating, ruminating on these verses and choose to make these real in your life. If so, your 2nd thoughts will become glorifying to God and you will be transformed into a new person characterized by righteousness and holiness, useful to His kingdom. Eph. 4 22 put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Powerful stuff!
Grow in your faith by being mindful and purposeful with your 2nd Thought.
