The Scripture is Fulfilled!

“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” are the words Jesus spoke when he began his ministry as recorded in Luke 4 when he read from Isaiah 61:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor

This is The Good News!  Hallelujah!  That this Good News has come to the poor in spirit.  Those in captivity are freed.  The blind receive sight. The oppressed are released.  And the year of the Lord’s favor has arrived!  Hallelujah!  Because the anointed one has come, we are living in these times right now, today.  And the one who is the anointed one lives in you right now (John 17).

As Jesus identified himself he received much favor from the people as: “all spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth”.  News about him spread and everyone praised him.

Immediately Jesus then addresses the religious establishment as well as other insensitive people and giving two cross cultural examples he shows that this Good News is available for those outside the Jewish Faith: a widow from Zarephath in the region of Sidon, and a Syrian.  This Good News is for all people, even Gentiles, it is not exclusive.

Then those who were just: “speaking well of him” became furious at him tried to throw him off a cliff!  But Jesus walked right through them and went on his way.  Amazing how fast people can turn, and equally amazing is that he was protected as he: “walked right through the crowd and went on his way”.

This is the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.  A declaration of identification and revelation.  And an encouragement that when the truth is spoken and met with extreme resistance, even danger, there can be protection from persecution.

An extreme mix of emotions and reactions can happen when the truth is spoken and those in darkness have paradigms shaken and can no longer live as they desire.  It even happens on a personal level.  When we must face our own demons and change who we are as Christ reveals himself and truth to us.

So be encouraged.  When you speak the truth of the Gospel you may be met with people trying to throw you off a cliff, but you will be protected.  And face your own misconceptions of the Gospel and your own applications of Gospel truths in your life.  Be encouraged, anointed savior is here, the time is now, it is the year of the Lord’s favor!
