46  “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built ahouse on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”    –    Luke 6:46-49

For those that don’t know I have been in the concrete industry for over 30 years. The majority of those years have been spent on my hands and knees finishing concrete. There are multiple messages that can be generated from the life of a tradesman, however today’s message is on the Rock.

You see, every time I have ever had to repair, replace, or reinforce a concrete slab, it has been due to one issue. The Foundation. Every time. There has never been a time in 30 years of concrete work on hotels, homes, high-rises, hospitals, schools, roadways, bridges, cabins, basements, retaining walls, …   not one of those times was the failure of the concrete we were replacing unrelated to a poor foundation. Every time!

The photo above is from the Brooks Lake Lodge in Wyoming. I was lucky to spend a few days there a couple years back and the story of the lodge ownership and it’s creation was quite impressive. I slept in one of the outlying cabins named the “Hunter”. It was just large enough for  a bed, bathroom, and sitting area, but with the wood burning stove, the view of the mountains, and absolute solitude, it was truly amazing. What struck me so intensely, as a concrete man, was that this lodge and these cabins had withstood the test of time and weather for over 150 years! Every winter, every spring, the earth underneath it freezing and thawing and then the same year after year, yet no repairs. No problems to the structures… only minor cosmetics had been worked on after all those years. The Tradesmen that built the LODGE had set a PROPER FOUNDATION. Unwavering, properly prepared, sub-grades inspected, mortar, rock and “concrete” properly mixed, placed, and cured, all to the perfection of the plans… and here today, standing tall amidst the Rocky Mountains without need of repair for over 150 Years.

How similar to our faith?  Scripture sites multiple references to foundations, and earth yet, specifically, CHRIST our Cornerstone, the ultimate foundation. How strong our lives will be built on him. How unwavering is the family built upon His name and His Kingdom?

How have you built your life? Is it time for the demolition crew to come in and start over from the bottom up? Or maybe your house is firmly built on God’ Truth and you are witness to others of lasting love in the name of Christ? Is there someone you know that can learn how those stones have been set in your life? Are you sharing your trade with another?

Here’s a few scriptures referencing foundation…

FINALLY,  For your viewing pleasure… on the last day of my trip I was blessed to have a one on one snowmobile day, full access to 18″ of fresh powder with just myself and the paid guide. Around 2.5 hours into our day, My sled ran out of gas!! Here’s the time lapse of me waiting out the saving guide and sitting out in the wilderness (referencing yesterday’s post) Enjoy!

Father, you are the Rock. Let us build our foundations on you alone! Christ alone, Cornerstone!
