Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path. – Psalm 119:105
John 8:12 – Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Matthew 5:14 – “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
John 12:46 – I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
Philippians 2:15 – that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world
There are many verses in scripture that talk about the “light”. Not only is God’s Word a “light to our path” but also He is “the Light of the World” and calls us to “let our light shine” . There are many ways to reveal, explain, and describe the light. Yet, yesterday morning… the “light to my path” would have been the best.
As you may be able to tell from the picture… .I had a run in with some darkness yesterday. As I awoke at my normal 4:05 AM wake up slot, I walked to the bathroom entry as I have every morning when I rise. Surely, there was nothing different from yesterday morning, than every other day, yet when I neared the bathroom it hit me! Literally, the wall/door jam hit me square in the head. “Crack” … right into the wall i walked. As the thud resonated down my neck line and the throbbing began. Not more than 4 seconds later i felt the gushing of blood that came from my forehead, as I found the light i examined the damage. What I found was a 1 inch gash running perpendicular to my eyebrow and the wound hurt like hell.
After some soaking up of the blood and application of a bandaid over the wound, i brushed my teeth, found my clothes, and headed out of the house for the morning.
I felt this to be somewhat of a lesson in regards to our walk with Christ. We can be quite regular in our faith practices, good prayers habits, regular worship, service in the Kingdom, bible study, yet every so often you’re going to just get smacked in the head with something. For me yesterday, the initial blow was the worst of it, outside of describing to everyone i met that day the silliness of how this happened. Is it not much the same when our stumbles occur with our faith?
“oh yeah, i prayed to God for that scenario, but it’s just not in His Priority list right now for me”
or maybe, “yes, i know, but it was just one night, and i’ve been doing pretty solid up until then” ….
or maybe more intense, like a family illness, disease, or even a death comes near our lives?
Regardless of the “thing” , blows to the head will come… we HAVE to tread through darkness every so often. Yet, with more consistent practice of the KEY strengtheners of our faith, our stumbles are JUST stumbles, not hang ups or deal breakers. Staying in the Word, being in relationship with other, leaning on God through prayer, trust, & worship… all of these REGULAR habits make us so much more resilient when the blows come. You, I …. we HAVE TO BE PREPARED for the blows to come… and when we are prepared, they are usually MUCH EASIER to live with…
Yesterday was just a fluke… I’ve walked through that darkness into the bathroom a thousand times… but walking some Light to my path would have been MUCH easier.
Father, be our Light. Amen
