Treasures

Mattew 6:19-20 – 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Good morning!

My wife and I were walking on the beach and came across the houses in the picture above. It caught my attention for a couple of reasons. It is not often you come across a house with a tent over it, but this scene also brought me back to an earlier point in my life when we were going to be visiting an aunt in California. We were going to stay with her, but she told us her house had to be “tented”. I never saw her house in this way, but always wondered how they would do this. Upon seeing the house in the picture, I sent my aunt the picture and asked if this is what she had been talking about and it was. Evidently this is quite common in beach communities and is used in the treatment of termites!

The trip we are currently taking was planned a while ago. We were to visit gamily in Ohio, go to a memorial golf tournament in honor of my wife’s uncle, go see a cousin’s band who was opening for Rick Springfield (for my wife of course!), and then go to Florida to visit more family and travel around the state to Naples, The Keys, Melbourne, etc! This was all planned before a death in the family caused the golf tournament to be canceled and two hurricanes left much of Florida devastated! As the time for the trip approached we considered just canceling completely, but then decided to continue on as planned. I am so glad we did!

The Lord has used this trip to begin a reconciliation between family members; we have been able to provide some things for others that they wouldn’t have been able to provide for themselves and He has given us the opportunity to spend some needed time away from the demands and routines that often overtake us in our day-to-day lives! I wish we could have done more to help the people of Florida as they continue to dig out of the mess that Hurricane Irma left them, but we have seen how He is using others to do just that!

Where are we laying up our treasures! Do we place so much value in our “house” that it is no longer a home? Would we be devastated if termites (or moths and vermin) were to destroy it? Is it time to “tent” our lives to kill off the pests that have taken what is truly important and made it secondary to “stuff”? I have heard that a rut is just a grave with the ends kicked out! Are we in a rut that is not allowing us to fully enjoy the relationships God has placed us in? We are keen to watch out for the big ugly wolf or the demon with a pitchfork and horns … we are ready for those battles! But let us also be mindful of where and in what we are placing or value/treasures!
