12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Good morning Men, I would like to hopefully encourage us a little this morning and to try to find some grace for ourselves. My guess is that most of have a story to tell of what were like before we came to know our Lord and Savior Jesus. From the little I know of some of you, there is addictions, lying, cheating, stealing, and adultery. There is also abuse, both abuse that you have perpetrated upon others as well as abuse that has been perpetrated on you. I am confident that there are other things that I did not list, please know that Jesus knows from where you came and was with you through it all.
And now that we are on the other side of that mess, we are still faced with the lingering effects and consequences. Yes Jesus saved us, we not longer have to do those things and as we are encouraged to do in Colossians we are to put on the new man. I would contend men that as we put on the new man and walk in that newness of life that we are creating a legacy for those who are coming after us.
I know that my children have paid a price from my way of life before coming to the Lord. But that have now seen me surrender to the Lord, repent of behavior and attitudes and own the pain I have caused. This has brought healing and restoration to our family. In turn the Lord is ministering to them. And now I see what the Lord is doing in their life’s and how they are ministering to and loving their children. What will the Lord do with the generation after that? And after that?
I know that I had a Grandmother and a Great Grandmother who prayed for me as well as her own children, most of her children endured hardships through their lives of which I can only image. If you were to ask them about their children I am sure that they would be upset and discouraged as they pondered how they parented. However I would contend that their legacy lives on and is being passed on.
I know Men that you have a similar story, we are not who we once were and I would contend that we are further from that old man than we think. While we are not where we should be, we are not where we were to the praise and glory of God alone. Let’s stop believing the lies of the enemy and take this a step at a time trusting in the God who saved us from that miserable past.
We are not perfect and will only experience that perfection upon our return Home. In this world however, we have His Word and His Spirit within us to help us along this journey.
In the midst of all of our self-doubt and regret can we trust that the Lord is creating a legacy for Himself through us. Through our children, and our children’s children and their children.
Father, I pray for each on of us this morning that through us you would be gloried. Thank you for calling us out of the darkness and into Your light. Help us today to look to you and to trust you with every aspect of our life. Help us to put on the new man and love as you love us. Thank you that we are new men and that you are faithful with the outcome of each of lives. Amen!!
