4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness[d] be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned[e] and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Recently my wife and I were talking about some recent events that have occurred around our house. Last week the refrigerator stopped working. My efforts to repair were amateur at best and while I did not break anything else in the process I was not successful. As we both sat and watched TV in despair as we contemplated the purchase of a new refrigerator the TV just stopped working, it turned off without warning and we just looked at one another in confusion. While we were able to get the TV back on continued in our refrigerator despair.
The following morning as we had resolved that a new refrigerator is what was needed I was starting a load of laundry and the washer went crazy with the blinking lights and odd sounds. Did I mention as well that the dryer was not drying the previous load?
In a very short span of time I/we became very discouraged and I was ready to start throwing what could only be described as a temper tantrum of a 3 year old .
It was at that time that my wife reminded me that all of the issues above really are first world problems – We have a spare refrigerator in the garage to keep our food, we have the ability and resources to purchase a new refrigerator. I was able to reset the washer and the dryer is functioning again and of course our TV is working again.
This is the time that we stopped what were doing, stopped our complaining and thanked the Lord for all that He continues to do for us. It was pretty clear that He was using those things that we rely on daily to remind us that He is still in control and that we should be grateful for all that He has done. And He has done more that I could image He could.
From saving me from addiction(s), saved a failing marriage and reconciled my family. He has provided me with a wonderful home and loving and caring family and a community of Godly men that watch out for me, that call me out and walk with me even when I am stuck in a sin a cycle.
When I put on the gratitude filter and look at all that He has done and stop looking at what I don’t have or what I think I need I am able to be content as I have so much to be thankful for as it says in 2 Samuel 12:18b …And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more!
Father, as we celebrate our countries freedom in the coming days let us also remember the freedom that comes only from You. Give each of us a heart of gratitude regardless of our circumstances. Help us to see You in everything. AMEN!!
