1 Peter 5:5-11
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[a]
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
I read a quote from C.S. Lewis that said – Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.
This has been a difficulty message for me to hear, I find that I spend a considerable amount of time thinking about myself. I will also go so far as hide my own selfishness in helping others. As a good friend of mine tells me often. “We are sicker than we think”. That is true for me today, however, I am comforted by Peter words this morning.
Speaking of humility Peter challenges me to swallow my pride by submitting to my elders, that is both an individual older than myself as well as to my church leaders. For a about 4 years now I have not been under the authority of a church, my wife and I attend church regularly but were not putting our roots down and this has impacted our marriage. As not belonging to a church body no one knew us and as such speaking for myself I had very little accountability. I don’t know about you but I find it really easy to slip back into thinking more of myself when I am not relationship with other men to help me keep my eyes on Jesus.
Peter goes on to me that I should clothe myself with humility – this is something that I to put on everyday and I need to wear it well. 1 Peter 3:8 encourages this Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
When I do these things I can trust in Him, I can trust His Power, His Plan and His Love – all of which are perfect and lacking nothing. I need to trust Him as trusting myself has only lead me to heartbreak.
Finally, I will say this – Humility Trusts and Pride Controls – Psalm 84:11-12 –
For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
from those whose walk is blameless.
blessed is the one who trusts in you.
Father it is to you I owe everything, help me today to not think less of myself before You as we are Your Sons, but rather help us to think or ourselves less and to put others first. Amen!!
